Welcome back to the ongoing blog of Fairhope Cosmetic Dentistry! Today, we want to tell you a story about a patient of ours, Dana, who was able to get the care she needed thanks to our services. We invite you to contact us at any time if you have any questions, concerns, or think that we can give you the help you need. In the meantime, let’s talk about Dana and how she came to be a patient at our Fairhope, AL dental practice.
Dana is a middle-aged mother of four and a stay-at-home mom. For many years, she had avoided visiting the dentist due to her anxiety. As a child, her parents took her to a less-than-stellar dentist that always made her feel stressed and afraid. Many times, she was uncomfortable during treatment. It was a bad experience overall. When she became an adult, she vowed to herself that she would never put her own children in a similar situation. So she didn’t.
However, the anxiety she felt about visiting the dentist lingered on a prevented her from creating good dental care habits for her family. They simply did not go to the dentist unless something was wrong. Fortunately, Dana taught her family how to take great care of their teeth at home, so problems rarely came up. But when they did, Dana did not know where to turn.
One morning, Dana noticed some pain while eating breakfast. It wasn’t harsh pain, just a little soreness when chewing. She decided to monitor how it felt for the next couple days before making a decision. Well, it did not get any better. In fact, it got a little bit worse. She knew she needed professional help.
Fortunately, she knew her mother had found a new dentist that she said was gentle and friendly. Maybe she would get the office number to call them and see what they said about the pain. She gave her mom a call.
“Hi, Mom. It’s Dana.”
“Hi sweetie. How’re the kids?”
“They’re fine,” Dana said, “but I’m not feeling so great. I think I need to see a dentist.”
“Oh. Do you have someone in mind? I know you aren’t too fond of trips to the dentist.”
“No, I don’t. I know you had found someone that you said is gentle and takes good care of you. Do you think you can give me their number?”
“Sure, honey. I go to Fairhope Cosmetic Dentistry. All of the doctors and staff members there are friendly and will help you feel comfortable, I promise. They even have sedation options! Let me find the phone number,” Dana’s mother said.
Dana wrote down the phone number, but still didn’t call them right away. Her anxiety was getting the better of her. It wasn’t until the pain got even worse that she knew she needed help right away. She called our office and booked an appointment.
Her Visit To Our Office
Because we knew Dana was in pain, we worked her into our schedule as quickly as possible. During her visit, we used nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help her feel comfortable. Once we took X-rays and examined the situation, we found that she had some decay in one of her molars. This was what was causing pain.
We decided on placing a crown to correct the damage. To undergo this procedure, Dana opted to use oral conscious sedation, a mediation that helped her feel groggy, relaxed, and comfortable throughout treatment. She left our office free from discomfort and with a healthy, beautiful tooth once more.
Dana’s Happy Ending
Because of Dana’s positive experience, she knew she could trust us with keeping her smile healthy on a regular basis. Dana now visits us every six months for a checkup. We have helped her tackle some other small dental health problems and even helped her brighten her smile with whitening!
