Spring Cleaning: Not Just For Your Home!

How long has it been since your house has had a good top to bottom cleaning? Like most of us it’s probably been months. While it might not be frigid all winter in Fairhope we all still tend to shut the windows and wait for spring to do a really thorough cleaning. Now that spring is here it’s time to put some elbow grease into a serious fresh start for the new summer to come.

While you’re thinking about cleaning it’s important to also consider your teeth this time of year. At Fairhope cosmetic Dentistry we’re big on twice a year dental cleanings – they’re a great way to get your smile ready for six more months of use. You wouldn’t want to leave your house a mess all year long, so don’t leave your teeth that way either!

A Clean Mouth: It’s Part Of Your Overall Health

Your oral health is important to your whole body. Poor oral health has been linked to a number of health problems, such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and even osteoporosis. Just more reasons to keep your mouth healthy!

While good oral health care starts at home it’s practically impossible for you to keep your mouth completely clean. There are a lot of small nooks and crannies in your mouth that your brush and floss can’t reach. That’s why professional dental cleanings and exams are so essential.

What You Get With A Checkup At Our Office

When you come to our Fairhope office for your six month dental checkups we’ll do a variety of things to keep your mouth clean and healthy. You’ll have a chance to meet with your dentist to discuss any treatments you may need or want, have a complete comprehensive exam, and a full cleaning of your teeth.

There are a lot more than just the basics when you come to us for a checkup. We have a variety of preventive treatments that we include as part of a comprehensive oral health package.

  • X-rays are always a part of any exam. We want to be sure that your teeth are healthy below the surface of your gums as well as above. Our X-rays are digital, giving us a clearer, more precise picture using only a fraction of the radiation of film X-rays.
  • Oral cancer screening is important too. A visual inspection doesn’t always catch the earliest stages, so we use a special mouth rinse that will temporarily dye any abnormal cells. This helps us catch problems faster so we can eliminate them or treat you earlier.
  • Fluoride varnish is a great way to rebuild lost enamel. As an alternative to the fluoride gels in use at many dental practices we use a clear varnish that is brushed directly onto your teeth. It delivers fluoride to your teeth over a longer period of time, making the results that much better.
  • Dental sealants go on the chewing surfaces of your molars and premolars. They’re colored to match your teeth and they seal the deep valleys on your teeth that are havens for oral bacteria. Once they’re clean we’ll just seal them off!

There’s also the cleaning, of course. We’ll remove excess plaque build up from your teeth and also have a chance to discuss any adjustments you need to make to your oral heath care habits. Just a couple tips could save you from cavities and expensive procedures later on!

Taking Care At Home

It’s surprisingly easy to take care of your teeth at home, but that doesn’t mean that you can go without regular cleanings! Follow these tips to be sure you keep your teeth as clean as you possibly can.

  • Bush twice a day for at least two minutes each time.
  • Use a soft bristled brush – hard bristles can damage your enamel.
  • Hold your brush at a 45 degree angle to your gums so you can be sure you’re getting right down to the line.
  • Make sure to get each side of each tooth – leave no bit unscrubbed!
  • Floss nightly. It’s a fundamental part of good oral health!
